Stuffing For Brains

I make a lot of things for coworkers. Mostly they request them or it's something that I can make which is personal for gifts.

Anyway, one of my coworkers has a niece with a little preemie baby that was born two months early. He came before the baby shower even! So I made this set of three hats for them in Auburn colors (parents are huge Auburn U fans, I'm told). I've seen lots of pictures of this little guy and I'm glad to know he's doing well. So I was very happy to make these three little hats for him to grow into. :)
Picture
The first hat, on the top of the stack, is about big enough to fit on an orange (this is how big his head was described to be -- SO TINY!), the middle one is about newborn baby sized, the bottom one is toddler or 12 month old size.

Yarn:
Orange ~ TLC Essentials: Persimmon
Blue ~ Red Heart Super Saver: Royal

The yarn in the photo looks brighter than it does in person... Hmm. Though, I'm told the father was quite happy with the colors. :) Considering I don't follow college football at all, I'm glad I did well!

Original patterns (or, you know, general increasing stitches in a round for the first two, the big one was more of an actual pattern).

But the hat and scarf are sooo delightful.

I'd been looking for a good pattern for a hat for a while, but having trouble, because I don't actually like hats very much. I was frustrated till my friend showed me this pattern from craftster.org. I liked it right away, so I made it my project for the September Church of Craft meet up.

The hat is convertible, so it can be either a hat or a cowl. Or a hat that you can pull your hair through. If you look at the pattern, the girl who made it models her own hats in all the styles that you can wear it.

I really liked the way the brim of the hat was made, because it switches off between front post and back post double crochet stitches, so you get this really cool ribbed effect, which is very soft and squishy. Because I loved the color of this yarn so much and the brim of the hat, I went ahead and made myself a scarf to match. It's extra long, too, and I love to wear it.

The yarn is, I think, my favorite yarn to date. Caron Simply Soft Eco, Ocean. Caron's Eco yarn is made 100% from recycled bottles, but it's seriously soft. Their Eco colors are also really awesome.

I made these items in September of 2009.
